Creating Dynamic Films

Renowned writer, director and film maker Ric Burns will share his views on condensing history into award-winning works that are both educational and entertaining. For almost 20 years, Burns has written, directed and produced such epic films as New York: A Documentary Film  and The Way West to crafting shorter portraits on American life including: Ansel Adams, Eugene O’Neill, Andy Warhol and Coney Island. Burns also worked with his older brother Ken to create the popular PBS series, The Civil War.

The art of chronicling historical details, for example, led Burns to producing an eight-part series on New York’s humble beginnings to becoming an undisputed world economic and cultural center. The first seven episodes were broadcast between 1999 and 2001. The final one – a three-hour celebrated and somber narrative of the rise and fall of the World Trade Center – aired nationally on PBS during September 2003.
