Investigative Reporter in Medicine and Science | Author

The Sports Gene – Late Specialization

November 14, 2018 | 10:30am | William Saroyan Theatre

David Epstein is a former senior writer at Sports Illustrated and the author of the The New York Times best-seller, The Sports Gene, Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance. He is one of the top sports science and medicine investigative journalists in America; he co-authored the 2009 report, for example, that revealed Alex Rodriguez’s use of steroids.

Epstein was an All-American college track star and is fascinated by what it takes to be a champion.  Is it 10,000 hours of practice and determination, or are we born with genes that determine how well we can perform?  He addresses how and why athletes train through “learned performance,” in addition to how coaches develop the athletes they lead. The wisdom Epstein shares on brain sports science and finding and maximizing one’s hidden talents produces lessons applicable to us all.
