Violinist Vijay Gupta attended Juilliard at seven, performed with the Israel Philharmonic at eleven, and joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic at 19. Torn between pursuing a career as a doctor or a violinist, he chose a bow instead of a scalpel to treat and heal society’s marginalized: the homeless and the mentally ill. Tapping the power of music therapy, he co-founded Street Symphony, a coalition of 90 musicians who harness the power of the arts to foster social connection by engaging communities affected by homelessness and incarceration through performances, workshops, and teaching artistry. By age 31, Gupta was named a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow for his work as a violinist and social justice advocate “providing musical enrichment and valuable human connection to the homeless, incarcerated, and other under-resourced communities in Los Angeles.” Recognized by 2019 Time 100 Next as a rising star shaping the future, Gupta delivers a symphonic message about music as a powerful instrument for healing and problem solving. This inspiring presentation will conclude with a special musical moment with Fresno Philharmonic Music Director Rei Hotada.
